Additional environmental investigations are currently underway in the vicinity of the Lhtako Gas and Convenience Store based on the results of the various sampling events conducted to date.

This phase of the project includes continued assessment of soil and groundwater quality in the Area of Notification including, but not limited to, drilling investigations as follows:

·         Advancement of approximately 3 boreholes for soil assessment purposes and installation of approximately 9 additional monitoring wells in the silt/clay layer above the drinking water aquifer to investigate whether recoverable fuel is trapped in this layer. These activities are important for developing and refining long-term remediation options for the contamination.

·         Installation of approximately 6 monitoring wells within the drinking water aquifer to monitor the performance of the containment system and to provide additional monitoring points to protect active residential water wells.  Groundwater samples from these new wells will supplement ongoing groundwater and tap water sampling activities in the area.

·         Installation of approximately 10 soil vapour probes to provide additional monitoring points around occupied buildings located near known soil and/or groundwater contamination.  These monitoring points are intended to supplement ongoing soil vapour and indoor air sample collection.

The ability to complete these field programs will be subject to LGCL being granted the required access and/or permits. The field programs, which commenced on September 3, 2024, are expected to continue until October 24, 2024.

These activities will be occurring on-reserve, within Arbutus Road and Mica Street, and on some residential properties. Some of the planned work will require the closure of sections of Arbutus Road and Mica Street between 7:30 am and 6:00 pm between September 9, 2024 and September 22, 2024 and will involve periods of noise related to the use of environmental drilling and hydroexcavation equipment. SLR and on-site traffic control personnel will work with residents adjacent to the work areas to maintain access to driveways along Arbutus Road and Mica Street. However, a detour may be necessary via either Red Willow Road or Lust Road to access individual driveways.
